Action Alert: Stand with Wabanaki

Despite their inherent sovereignty, tribes in Maine have historically been excluded from both true sovereign status and equal voting rights with other Mainers. The League of Women Voters of Maine stands with Wabanaki communities and their claim to tribal sovereignty.

A new tribal sovereignty bill, LD 2007, has its public hearing scheduled for this Monday, February 26 at 10:00 AM in the Judiciary committee. A public hearing is the time for everyone to offer their opinion on the legislation through testimony. 

We need to show legislators that we stand behind the Wabanaki. You can take action by submitting written testimony online. Legislators want to hear from the voters on this issue. Your testimony can be short and sweet — so long as it highlights why legislators need to support and pass LD 2007.

The Wabanaki Alliance has prepared a toolkit for submitting testimony. It has everything you need to get started, from drafting your statement to submitting it online. 

Now is the time to restore the inherent right of the Wabanaki tribes in Maine to self-govern within their respective territories in accordance with the same federal laws that generally govern tribal lands elsewhere in the United States.
