[Portland, ME] — The League of Women Voters today released a statement expressing support for newly released legislation to enact the National Popular Interstate Compact. The new legislation, LD 1578, is sponsored by Representative Art Bell and has bipartisan cosponsors.

“We are excited to see legislation reintroduced for Maine to pass the National Popular Vote,” said Anna Kellar, Executive Director for the League of Women Voters of Maine, “We know that Mainers believe that every vote for President should be equal, and Maine passing the National Popular Vote will be an important step towards this becoming reality.”

The League of Women Voters of Maine has supported the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPV) since 2019. The League supports the use of NPV as a way to achieve the goal of the direct popular vote for election of the president.

The National Popular Vote Interstate Compact ensures that the Presidency would go to the candidate who receives the most popular votes across all 50 states. It is a state-based approach that preserves the Electoral College, state control of elections, and the power of the states to control how the President is elected.

LD 1578 has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing.
